YOGA THERAPY

HAVE YOU HEARD OF YOGA THERAPY?  

WHAT IS IT?  

HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM A REGULAR YOGA SESSION?

Yoga therapy is the tailored application of yoga practices to the individual to empower them to improve their own health and wellbeing. It can help a variety of conditions including musculo-skeletal issues, arthritis, back pain, fibromyalgia, digestive disorders such as IBS, anxiety, stress, depression, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Insomnia, fertility issues, hypertension and many more.  It can be helpful at any age and no previous yoga experience is required. Yoga Therapy can be offered alongside existing medical treatments and complementary therapies.

Whilst a yoga teacher will offer adaptations to poses in a general yoga class, the yoga class is typically aimed at the whole group. Yoga Therapy is very much about the individual and the condition or concerns and issues they present with.

Using yoga philosophy, models and tools, yoga therapy can help address these issues and empower the client to take charge of their own healing and wellbeing. Yoga Therapy takes a holistic approach bringing together the mind, body and breath.

A Yoga Therapy session takes a much more in-depth approach than just a 1-1 private session. Clients will be asked to provide a detailed health questionnaire in advance of the first session and that session will be 90 minutes long to allow for a detailed discussion of the client’s priorities and goals, as well as looking at posture, movement and breath. The client will then be given their own personal practice (supplemented with a written/recorded plan to help them practice between sessions) and a deep relaxation. Typically, a session may also include mindfulness practices, meditation, breath work techniques and sometimes the use of sound. Follow on sessions are 60 minutes.
